What is thyroid cancer and its cause?
Thyroid cancer is a cancer that begins and grows in the thyroid gland, which is located at the front of the neck. The thyroid glands are used to regulate the way the body uses energy, so it can work properly. The exact cause of thyroid cancer is unknown, but most medical experts believe that people who are exposed to lot of radiation from either their jobs or from medical treatments, are at risk of getting thyroid cancer.
What are the signs and symptoms of thyroid cancer?
There are several symptoms of thyroid cancer and they include, but are not limited to the following: a person having a swelling or lump on their neck, a person having pains in the ears and neck, a person having trouble swallowing, a person constantly wheezing or have breathing troubles, a person’s voice may become hoarse and the person may have frequent coughing, that is not related to having a cold. Also, most people with thyroid cancer do not have symptoms and are unaware of the illness until they have a physical exam or treatment for another illness.
How is this life-threatening cancer diagnosed?
The usual method doctors use to detect and diagnose thyroid cancer, is through a procedure called a biopsy. This procedure is done to remove a small piece of a thyroid tissue, by a use of a needle and then checked. Usually, the results of a biopsy are not definite and may require the removal of part or all of the thyroid gland for a definite answer on the presence of the disease to come out.
How is thyroid cancer treated?
The usual methods of treatment thyroid cancer are chemotherapy and radiation therapy, with both procedures having its own time frame of treatment and side effects. You should consult with a doctor to find out what is the best option of treating this disease.
The treatment also depends on the person’s age, the stage of the cancer and the type of the cancer the sufferer has, with treatment being light and with less side effects for early stage thyroid cancer patients and for latter stage thyroid cancer patients, a more intense and rough treatment with heavy side effects.
