The 3-year-old is full of wonder and spends a lot of time watching, observing, and imitating. Their days are filled with busy exploration of their world. Three-year-olds are interested in perfecting motor skills, and it is common for them to spend the entire morning going down the slide or riding a favorite tricycle. Three-year-olds have very little memory for past events and do not understand “yesterday” and “tomorrow” the way adults do.
In the language section, a child follows a two- or three-component command and recognizes and identifies almost all common objects and pictures. It understands most sentences and also understands physical relationships (”on,” “in,” “under”). It will use four- and five-word sentences and can say name, age and sex. It uses pronouns (I, you, me, we, and they) and some plurals (cars, dogs, cats) and strangers can understand most of her words
Those sequences are important to later understandings of change and consistency. He may invent invisible playmates. This companion may be a special someone or a menagerie of fantasy friends that change from day to day.
Make-believe friendships can also be forged with a favorite stuffed animal or doll. Imaginary friends help a child try out different activities, behaviors, emotions and dialogues. With imagination in full gear, 3-year-old children are entering a peak period for pretending at this stage of their development.
