The Perspective of a Mother

Motherhood is something no one can really understand until they are in the position. It’s the same for most things, of course. It’s hard to understand someone’s life until you have walked in their shoes.
It can take a lifetime to understand a mother, and what they really want for their children. No matter their age, whether 18 or 80, a mom will always find a way to treat you like her baby, which you are, but it stems from their love.
It’s taken years for me to begin to understand my mother. With my life devolving into chaos, it was my mother’s support that helped me the most. It was her love that kept me grounded.
Even the most unfortunate events can bring a mother and child closer together. Recently, I met a friend of my mother’s named Meena (name changed to protect privacy). Our conversation prompted me to write about mothers, the most important women in the world.
I met Meena at party after a dinner event. I was growing uncomfortably bored when she first approached me. She was a lovely woman, with numerous nice things to say about my mother. At first I just smiled and nodded, but soon we began to talk.
She told me she wished her daughter had been more like me, which I found startling. “Why?” I asked, and she went on to explain that her daughter seemed to hate her and felt seriously depressed. This made Meena feel like a failure as a mother. She seemed incredibly bothered by the situation, so I attempted to comfort her.
I eventually told her that her daughter would realize that when things get black, Meena, as her mother, would always be there for her. I told Meena that she should just attempt to show her the love and support for her daughter, the love that every mother wants to provide. I explained that she hadn’t failed as a mother, but that she’d simply hit a small bump in the journey.
That conversation brought me closer than ever to understanding the devotion a mother feels for her own child. If your mother seems to be driving you insane, simply remember that she’s doing it out of love, and that she wants what’s best for you no matter what.
