Flax seed grows wild on the western Canadian plains.  The flax seed flower is a pretty blue flower that is a valuable source of several different kinds of protein, fibre, Vitamin B, potassium, Magnesium, and Zinc. What makes flax seed a real wonder food is that it is an excellent source of omega 3, a mineral the human body needs but doesn’t produce.

Yoghurts, cottage cheese, and soy products are good sources of flax seed oil. Flax seed can also be bought in ground, capsule, and liquid form at a grocery store or health food store.

Lower your blood pressure

One of the reasons we need the omega 3 that is found in flax seed oil is to prevent hypertension. Hypertension, more commonly called high blood pressure, can be a very serious condition. If  hypertension goes unchecked it can trigger a heart attack or stroke. Flax seed oil is an excellent line of defence. The omega 3 in flax seed oil helps the body produce LCD, the good cholesterol.

A natural anti-inflammatory

Flax seed can be used as a natural anti-inflammatory. Ingesting flax seed can ease the pain of menstrual cramps, headaches, bloating, sprains, and bruises. Flax seed oil is also useful for easing the aching pain of rheumatoid arthritis. People who use flax seed oil in place of over-the-counter and prescription painkillers, don’t have to worry about side effects like bleeding ulcers and addiction.

Eliminate gallstones

In addition to assisting with regular liver function, flax seed oil also prevents the formation of gall stones. Gallstones are formed when bile hardens into rocks. The flax seed oil helps prevent gallstones by increasing the body’s LCD, thus keeping you off cholesterol lowering medications, increasing your body’s fibre, and increasing your metabolism.

Moisten your eyes

If you are prone to dry eyes you should make sure you increase your flax seed intake. The linseed in flax seed moistens your ocular cell membranes. For immediate relief you should apply one or two drops of liquid flax seed directly into your eyes.

Lose weight

Flax seed oil helps to improve the speed of your metabolism, meaning you’ll have more energy and will also start losing weight. The omega 3 found in flax seed oil is also an appetite suppressant.
