The Benefits of Aromatherapy

aromatherapy

aromatherapy Aromatherapy is the art of using essential oils derived from plants to treat ailments and to achieve health and beauty.  Dating back over a thousand years, aromatherapy is thought to have originated in China.

The essential oils that are used are known to have therapeutic effects on the body and they are a holistic tool used by naturopathic practitioners across the world.

Aromatherapy is considered a healing art that is widely accepted in various circles of holistic medicine. Aromatherapy not only uses essential oils, but also incorporates other natural ingredients such as cold pressed vegetable oils, herbs, sea salts, clays and milk powders.

Many people mistakenly confuse fragrant oils with essential oils; these are not the same thing.  Fragrance oils are frowned upon because they contain synthetic chemicals and have no therapeutic effects on the body.

To avoid confusion, always read ingredient labels. Fragrance oils are commonly listed as fragrances and these products should be avoided in the use of aromatherapy.

Some people prefer to make their own aromatherapy concoction because it allows for complete control over included ingredients. Many health food stores sell individual oils and provide instructions for their use in aromatherapy.

By inhaling essential oils into the lungs, the body receives both physical and psychological benefits. Inhalation of these oils allows the natural chemicals found in the oils to provide therapeutic effects on the body.

Essential oils can be used for cleaning supplies and laundry soap. Some of these oils act naturally to repel insects, such as the essential oil citronella.

Aromatherapy massage is becoming the latest craze among this generation. It helps to relax the body’s aching muscles and helps to improve sleep. It not only helps in digestion but also aids in blood circulation. It energizes the body, reduces inflammation and kills the bacterial and fungal infections.

Consumers should be aware of the limitations of aromatherapy. While aromatherapy will not cure cancer, it can, when applied correctly in combination with other wellness techniques, help calm fears, ease nausea and enhance the mood of cancer patients.  This in turn can enhance the quality of life of patients and lead to improved immune function overall.
