Teaching How To Tie Shoes

Though most kids’ shoes now feature Velcro closures, learning to tie ones own shoes is still considered to be milestone that children should master by 5 or 6 years of age. But, teaching a child to tie his own shoes can be frustrating; kids can lose interest quickly if they feel the task is too difficult, or they may seem to “get it” one day only to completely forget the next. Teaching a child how to tie shoes is one of those parental challenges that seem to come all too quickly when raising a little one.
From meeting their every need when they are infants to slowly letting go, one step at a time, as they begin to mature, moms and dads soon learn to recognize the signs of growing up. Tying shoes is definitely one of those signs, and most children are typically ready to master this task by the time they begin formal education in public or private school. Simplest method teaching how to tie shoes include Tell your child that he needs to make his shoe laces into the ears of a bunny rabbit and ask him to make a knot for the bunny’s ears by taking the laces and cross them over, so as to form an “X”.
Then, tell him to pull one ear through the bottom of the “X”, tightly and teach him to lace the loops in the form of “bunny ears”. Tell him that he needs to make the ears of the bunny tight, otherwise they will fall off. Finally, make him form another “X” using the “bunny ears”, slide one ear under the “X” and pull tightly. Some parents use different colored laces for each shoe to make it easier for the child to interlace them. Another tip is to use different shoes (one from two different pairs) as a joking way to help your preschooler take more interest in the task.
You can use eye-catching laces or even remove them from the shoes and work with your child at a table. While you could use Velcro or another fitting mechanism, it is best to let kids learn how to tie shoe laces while they are young, as they will almost certainly need this skill at some point.
