Taking Care Of Your Pearly Whites
August 26, 2008
Don’t you wish you had teeth just as sparkling white as what you see on the movie screen? Whiter than fresh snow or milk. Today, thanks to advanced cosmetic and dental technologies, white teeth are no longer a fantasy. They are possible to get, with or without your dentist’s help. Here is how:
Toothpaste, Chewing Gums Et Al
From toothpastes to chewing gums, stores are brimming with products that promise white teeth. They work, but there isn’t a lot of difference. However, they do clean your teeth though, especially if you are used to consuming foods like cafeeine and nicotine that stain.
These toothpastes work as they contain mild abrasives that help remove surface stains. Unlike bleaches, these products do not alter the intrinsic colour of one’s teeth. Such products merely help keep your teeth clean. And, money matters as depending on the brand and the size, such toothpastes will cost anywhere between Rs. 80/- and Rs. 200/-, while chewing gum goes for Rs. 5/- and Rs. 20/-.
Gel Based Strips And Trays
If, you are looking for a special makeover, go for over-the-counter leaches like strips and trays. They are easy to apply gels that don’t really require a dentist’s supervision. They help to make your teeth look brighter, but it’s only temporarily and the procedure has to be done regularly to be effective. These pre-prepared kits contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which can lighten teeth up to 30%. Those with sensitive teeth should stay away from long gel application periods.
In Office Bleaches
They are dental processes that your dentist uses for teeth whitening and are similar to the ones already mention; the only difference being the dentist’s preference of bleaching kit. Since, most of these procedures have a higher percentage of bleach, this makes them more effective. You see a lot of difference in the tooth colour after a sitting. However, this is expensive as the whole kit, including the dentist’s treatment costs Rs. 15,000/- to Rs. 20,000/-.
Bear In Mind
Aim for a tooth colour that matches the whites of your eyes. Consult your dentist, even for over the counter whitening products. Before trying a bleaching product at home, get a dental check-up and get your dentist’s help in choosing the right product depending on your teeth or gum sensitivity. Follow bleaching directions. Never over bleach as it can lead to oral problems.
