Symptoms Of Reiter’s Syndrome

Swollen and painful joints
This is the first symptom that you can notice in case of Reiter’s syndrome. The pain can also be in the spine, large joints of the legs or sacroiliac joints. Heels, ankle and toe joints can also become painful. Some people have an attack of arthritis, which may last anywhere from three to six months. On the other hand, some people have complained of having a constant pain of arthritis. This pain is however temporary, as in it does not lead to permanent damage or disability in the joints.
Inflammation of the membrane under the eyelids
This is also a possible symptom of the Reiter’s syndrome. This inflammation need not be always painful, but in some cases, it is painful. This infection is also only temporary. It does not stay for long and more importantly, it causes no permanent damage. About 5% of the people suffering from the Reiter’s syndrome also have iritis. This is caused when the iris becomes inflamed. The tissues, which are responsible for opening and closing the pupil are affected, as a result, it can affect the vision if it is not treated in time.
Urinary tract infection
In this, the urethra or the bladder becomes inflamed. This causes burning sensation while urinating. In men, a discharge from the penis is also observed. This however, is painless. Men can also develop inflammation of the prostrate gland whereas in women, it can result in cystitis, an inflammation of the bladder.
Skin problems
These are one of the main symptoms of Reiter’s syndrome. Sores develop in various parts of the body including mouth, tongue or even on the penis, in case of men and in case of women, on their external genital organs.
Rash may appear on the feet, especially the sole. However, it much less common on the feet compared to the other parts of the body. The rash that develops is nothing but thick and hyper pigmented outer layers of the skin.
