What is Down’s syndrome and how is it caused?

Down’s syndrome is the most common and known form of mental retardation and is caused by a mishap in the chromosomes of the infant, where one of the chromosomes is damaged, causing mental and physical instability in the child.

What are the symptoms of Down’s syndrome?

The common symptoms of Down’s syndrome are easily noticeable at the inflicted child’s birth by a doctor and/or the parents of the child. One of these signs are that the child is generally physically and mentally not up to par, meaning that a child with Down’s syndrome are usually very quiet, slow to responding to questions and commands and are physically weak.

The other symptoms of Down’s syndrome are the following but are not limited to: having a flat face and a small head, having a flat nose bridge (which is lower set then normal noses), having a small mouth, which makes the tongue look bigger. Down’s syndrome patients also have eyes that are slanted upwardly, having extra fold of skin in the corners of each eye, having rounded cheekbones, having small and ill-shaped ears, having small and wide hands, having a deep crease that runs through them middle of the palms of each hands and a misshaped fifth finger, having a wide spreads between the big and second toes, having less-than-usual creases under the soles of the feet, having double joints that are very flexible and are shorter than average.

In addition to having these problems, about half of the Down’s Syndrome patients have problems with their hearts, through a defect caused by the disorder which reduces the flow of blood throughout the body. These patients also suffer intestinal, liver, stomach, thyroid, ear, and eye and throat problems and are more likely to contract other diseases like thyroid disease and/or kidney and liver disease.

As for a cure for Down’s syndrome, there is no known cure or any real treatments other than offering classes and instruction programs to people with this disorder, to help them cope better with their life.
