Symptoms and Causes of Vaginal Infection
What are the symptoms?
When it happens and it’s very likely to happen at one point or another, you are likely to have a vaginal infection. The most common symptoms are itching and an unpleasant odor. You aren’t likely to want sex when you have one and the itch will drive you insane! There are three very common infections, Trichomoniasis, Vaginitis and Yeast infection. If it’s a yeast infection, you may also have symptoms such as discomfort during sexual intercourse, a thick white vaginal discharge and scratching may be very uncomfortable to downright painful. We’ve gone over the symptoms; now let’s take a look at the causes and treatments.
The Causes
Low immunity can render you more likely to get an infection. Stress is also a factor because it contributes to poor diet, lack of sleep, and sometimes, the increased use of illegal drugs. The same is also true for contracting the flu and for allergy problems. Some of these infections can be the direct result of taking antibiotics. Having diabetes can make you more susceptible, as can anything inserted into the vagina including tampons and diaphragms that have been in for too long.
Other Things to avoid
If you have sexual relations after you have contracted an infection, the partner can give the infection right back to you after you’re treated. It is adviseable to avoid sugary foods and drinks because they can make the symptoms worse. You may want to avoid colored or deodorant treated toilet paper. Avoid non cotton underpants or don’t use any at all to allow air to circulate. You will also want to avoid wet clothing over an extended period of time. Some detergents and fabric softeners can contain irritants as well.
The Remedies
There are many over-the-counter remedies for vaginal infections and you need to use these as directed to completely rid yourself of the infection. If the infection does not respond to the medication, and you are following the advice above, it’s time to see your doctor. Antibiotics are usually prescribed for more stubborn infections.
When you are sure you have successfully cleared the vaginal infection, you can follow the instructions above to keep the infection from recurring. You will be able to resume your healthy sex life.
