Obese people are more prone to dangerous and life-taking diseases. Therefore, it becomes imperative to get rid of the extra layer of fat. After trying out various diet patterns, exercises and supplements, some people are unsuccessful in losing weight.
Therefore, they go in for procedures like surgeries that involve removing of the unwanted layers of fat and bringing the body back into shape. The NIH (National Institutes of Health) states that if the weight of a person increases to 20 % more than the required ideal weight then health problems can increase.
The procedure of weight loss surgery varies from person to person. It is better to consult a bariatric surgeon to plan the surgery. He can guide you with the right procedure as well as give you an idea of the expenditure involved.
These surgeries start form Rs. 1.5 lakhs. Don’t think that this surgery does not involve any complication or risks. Though the risks differ from individual to individual, they can be quite serious and dangerous.
However, with the advancement of the surgical procedures, many risks have been minimized. Prior to the surgery it is essential to sign a consent form that includes the merits as well as demerits of the surgery.
Weight loss surgery involves two procedures – a restrictive procedure, that involves decreasing the food intake, and a malabsorptive procedure that involves alterations of the digestive system so that the food is incompletely absorbed in the body.
Restrictive procedures involve Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, in which a small pouch is created which has an outlet that is controlled by a band or ring, and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band procedure, which involves division of the stomach in two portions to regulate the food and create a feeling of fullness.
Other procedures include Biliopancreatic Diversion, which is a Malabsoptive procedure in which the size of the stomach is reduced and a stomach pouch is created, and gastric bypass surgery, which is the combination of restrictive and malabsorptive procedures whereby malabsorption is added in addition to creating a pouch in the stomach.
