July 2, 2008
As an ancient civilisation, India has been home to nature care and Ayurveda skin care from time immemorial. Natural care is using nature itself to using herbs, homemade remedies or Yoga practices for a healthy mind and body. To best sample the joys of summer, follow a diet and routine that keeps you in balance.
If, you follow the following excellent summer Ayurvedic skin care tips. You can keep your skin looking beautiful all summer long and much, much after. Drinking lots of water is recommended, not only what we lose by sweating but also to help flush toxins out of the body and keep the skin looking soft and dewy. Herb or spice teas, such as, mint, cardamom, fennel, with their skin-enhancing ingredients are very beneficial, as well. Iced beverages are to be avoided as they hinder digestion and create toxins which cause skin breakouts.
Eat fruits, vegetables and herbs that supply the skin with essential nutrients and contain free-radical fighting antioxidant properties, even as they help keep the skin cool. Carrots, lettuce, summer squash, zucchini, celery, asparagus and leafy greens are good vegetable choices. Sweet juicy fruits such as pears, grapes and mangoes both nourish and cleanse. Fresh ginger, cilantro, mint and basil add flavour and aromas to dishes. Go easy on spicy foods to prevent your skin from breaking out or getting inflamed.
Drink milk everyday as it not only cools, it also contains nutrients that prevent skin from drying out. Combine it with almond meal and rose water to make a cooling skin cleanser. Get plenty of quality rest each nigh by keeping your bedroom cool, dark and comfortable. Sleep on cotton or linen sheets and go to bed early for clear healthy skin and sparkling eyes.
Stress, anger or frustration cause skin furrows, fine lines and breakouts. Practice calming yoga poses or meditation to stay serene and help your body and mind manage stress. Use rose, sandalwood and lavender essential oils to keep mind and heart balanced. Go for a walk on the beach or through a cool shady garden.
Meticulously clean your skin morning and night with a non-soap based gentle cleanser that deep cleanses without drying out the skin. Mix almond meal, oatmeal, milk and rosewater to make a cleanser for dry / normal skin. For oily skin, try chickpea flour or oatmeal with yogurt and a little lemon and neem powder. Tone skin with a toner contains no alcohol.
Nourish your skin with herbal moisturizers that contain skin-friendly herbs, such as, sandalwood, turmeric, brahmi, amla and aloe vera. Treat your skin to once a week homemade skin appropriate face mask made cucumbers, avocados, apricots and papayas. Puree the fruit or vegetable and blend with yogurt, honey, oatmeal and lemon juice (for oily skin) or rosewater (for dry skin). Apply evenly to the face, let stay for 15-20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water.
Never go out in the sun during the hottest parts of the day i.e. between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Outdoor exercise should be done early morning. Wear sunscreen, lip protection, sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat should be worn when going out, as the sun can age skin very rapidly. A thin mixture of red sandalwood powder and rosewater applied to your skin 2-3 times a week can help it become more resilient. Carry aromatherapy floral water to stay refreshed.
Treat your eyes and feet to some tender loving car by splashing them with lots of cold water. Soak cotton pads in cold or rose water and place them over closed eyes for 10-minutes. Avoid shoes; instead wear sandals to keep feet cool, able to breathe odour-free.
Ayurveda philosophy is very simple ‘If you cannot eat it, do not put it on your skin. What is put on the skin should be filled with nourishment, naturally occurring vitamins and minerals safe enough to be taken internally.’ Follow this maxim and you will have soft, supple, glowing skin all your life!
