Study reveals that Carbonated drinks can not replace ORS

Sydney – According to Medical experts it is completely unsafe togive children carbonated drinks in substitute of oral rehydration treatment. According to then managing ‘flat’ carbonated drinks to children with sensitive vomiting and diarrhea, is not an alternative to oral rehydration.As per the standards issued by WHO, Oral rehydration solution or ORS comprises a perfect mix of salts and sugars to beat dehydration in gastroenteritis where as fluids, salts and sugars are lost through diarrhea and vomiting.
In popular perception, carbonated drinks are an effective alternative, particularly for children who are finicky about tastes.
But researchers at Watford General Hospital here were unable to back this up with any published trials.
Researchers at Watford General Hospital has looked for information about the contents of diverse types of liquids and compared them. They found carbonated drinks contained too much sugar but not sufficient salts.
The authors finished that “carbonated drinks, ‘flat’ or otherwise, including cola, provide inadequate fluid and electrolyte replacement and cannot be recommended”.
These researches have been available in the May issue of Archives of Disease in Childhood.
