Stillbirth and neonatal death

Stillbirth happens when the baby is dead after the 24th week of pregnancy. Neonatal death happens when a born baby is passed away before the age of four weeks.
Diagnosis
In some cases the women come to know about the stillbirth when they notice that the movements have stopped and they go for a check-up to confirm. Sometimes, it is discovered during the routine antenatal check-up, while in some cases the stillbirth isn’t noticed before the delivery.
Causes
In half of the cases the reason behind the stillbirth is not determined. While in some cases it occurs due to some infections in pregnancy like listeria or rubella also known as German measles, pre-eclampsia or eclampsia, any kind of illness or injury to the mother, ante-partum hemorrhage or extreme pre-maturity, whereas in some cases there are complications during labor or delivery that result in stillbirth. Sometimes the cause is not known as well. It is very difficult for the woman to face this situation.
The neonatal death may occur mostly because of congenital abnormality like a congenital heart disease or severe spina bifida or rubella syndrome. Another reason can be the low weight of the baby at the time of birth. Other reasons may include infections such as pneumonia and neonatal listeria infection.
Whatever the reasons may be, it becomes very difficult for the mother as well as the father to accept the loss of a child and their family and friends should be supportive and patient with them. They should acknowledge the baby’s loss and share their grief with them. Both the parents have to face the loss of the child and should be given enough time to grieve. For them it is not an easy situation and it takes a lot of time for people to come back to their normal routine. Even if it is a stillbirth, it is considered to be a loss of a child and it is equally painful as witnessing a live baby dying. Some maternity units also provide counseling services in such a situation.
