Stage Makeup

Application of stage makeup is a tricky process. Applied in thick layers, it can look extremely garish, which is why some people don’t put it on thick enough, which is a mistake. Stage makeup may look dark when putting it on, however it tends to fade under the bright lights of the stage.
Stage makeup should be applied to a clean face. As in everyday makeup, we begin by selecting a colour that matches the skin tone. It can be either a little darker or a little lighter, but basically it must be in the same range. Using a latex sponge, apply stage makeup foundation by dabbing cheekbones, nose, forehead, jaw and neck. Blend well for full, even coverage.
With the face ready for sculpting, select shades around two shades darker and lighter than your cream foundation for the highlights and lowlights. If, you can’t find the perfect match for your skin, experiment by mixing darker shades with your cream foundation. With a sponge begin to outline the receding areas of your face e.g. sides of the nose, under the cheekbones, etc. Shape and blend well. Next highlight bone structure with colours, a shade or two lighter than your skin tone. Sculpt all face areas with highlight and shadow, blending shadow into the highlight to ensure an even distribution of both colours.
Accentuate eyes with colour accent, which is basically a regular eye shadow. To open small eyes, blend a dab of yellow makeup paint across the eyelid. An important step it allows the audience to see the eye movements clearly. To create the illusion of smaller eyes, use a heavy liner on top lid.
Use a translucent or baby powder to set the makeup and prevent it from becoming shiny and unnatural looking. Finally, apply rouge / blush, eyeliner, lipstick and mascara, as you would do in daily makeup. Women need to accentuate their cheekbones by using a deeper rouge or blush colour. For bold lips, line them with lip liner and fill in with a dark shade of lipstick. Use liner that is darker than your lipstick, blending the latter well into the liner. Just like women, stage makeup also requires men, at the very least, to use rouge, eyeliner and mascara. Not as heavy as a woman’s, however, it does need to define and slightly exaggerate the features.
Last but not least, use Remover Cream to remove stage makeup, although vegetable oil or Vaseline also take makeup off easily and are great for sensitive skin.
