Soothing an Upset Stomach

At best an upset stomach is an annoying distraction, at worse it makes it impossible to leave home. Either way an upset stomach limits not only our productivity but also our ability to enjoy life.

Analyze the cause
Before we can begin to cure our upset stomach we have to determine what caused it in the first place. Is it a result of food poisoning, a viral infection, stress, or an ulcer? Once you have discovered why you are feeling poorly you can start working on a cure.

Eliminate Stress
Stress and anxiety play havoc on our digestive tract. When your anxiety is so bad that it causes a stomach ache you need to take a few minutes to relax. Light a candle, take a hot bath, eat a piece of chocolate, and listen to your favorite music. Taking your mind off whatever is stressing you out is one of best ways to making yourself feel better. Exercise is an excellent way to ease your anxiety caused upset stomach, try going for a short run around the block or some yoga techniques.

Food Poisoning
Food poisoning is another common cause of an upset stomach. Vomiting is the body’s way of expelling the poison from your body. If you suspect food poisoning you should contact your doctor.

Stay Hydrated
If illness is the cause of your upset stomach you usually have to wait it out. Even though you probably won’t be able to eat anything until your stomach has settled you still have figure out a way to stay hydrated. The best way to get some moisture into your body and not further upset your touchy stomach you should suck on some shaved ice.

The use of ginger root has been used for hundreds of years to settle upset stomachs. Ancient civilizations used to chew on bit of the ginger root or boil it to make a tea. Now all we have to do is sip on some pre-made ginger ale.

Peppermint tea is also an effective way to settle your upset stomach and re-hydrate your body.

Eat a Bland Diet
After having an upset stomach you want to stay away from foods like cauliflower, onions, spicy foods, beans, and fried foods. Instead you need to eat bland foods such as rice, lightly toasted bread, bananas, and applesauce.
