Snow and Ice Removal Tips
July 24, 2008
While, snow swept landscapes look so romantic and beautiful, for those who live in these regions, getting rid of snow and ice is an undesired and dreaded chore. But, they have no choice but to remove it, as snow and ice may create a winter wonderland around us, yet uncleared they can ruin walkways, roofs, gardens etc. One of the many winter issues, there are many ways to get rid of snow and ice from roads, walkways, roofs et al. Some excellent snow removal tips include snow melting systems, sprinkling salt and other chemicals on slippery sidewalks to melt the snow and ice. However, these are harmful for nearby water bodies, soil, plants and even concrete surfaces.
Minimise use of salt and other chemical de-icers by shovelling or using a snow blower to remove the snow, apply de-icers or salt only to remove the last layer of ice. Mix salt with sand or cat litter to add traction to slippery surfaces. Use smaller quantities, as you will find salt is most effective if applied in a thin, even layer. Sprinkling salt and other chemical de-icers on slippery sidewalks may help melt snow and ice, but these products can be harmful to nearby water bodies, soil, plants and even concrete surfaces. Use calcium chloride to melt snow in the gutters and along roof edges.
You can also use an anti-icier which is a chemical agent applied before the snow begins to fall. It works by preventing the bonding, thereby facilitating the removal of snow and ice. One can also use electric snow melting systems to melt the snow and ice of pavements and walkways. Buried cables to heat surfaces such as sidewalks and driveways are laid before pouring the concrete, as also the Hydronic system, which uses flexible pipes buried under concrete to circulate heated fluid that warms the surface.
For larger areas, such as roads and highways, a snow plough is useful for removing the snow, while gravel can be spread to prevent cars from slipping on the ice, giving the car tyres some traction.
Have a wonderful winter season, but remember to shovel the snow, limiting your use of salt and de-icers. Not only will you be helping the environment but you will also be helping yourself get some exercise and lose unwanted weight!
