Smooth underarms

May 30, 2008

Though it sometimes means daily maintenance, shaving is the easiest way to remove underarm hair. The key is to get as close a shave as possible by using a shaving gel and raising your arms so the skin is taut (giving you more access to the hair). Because underarm hair grows in so many directions, it’s best to shave up, down and side to side.

For smooth underarms, slathering on mild soap and water can be less irritating than gels on the sensitive armpit area. After rinsing, skip the lotion but put on a pat of baby powder or cornstarch. Wait awhile before doing deodorant. Shave “down-there” hair wherever it’s exposed when you wear a swimsuit. Put fragrance-free cream, gel or lotion only on those sections. Use careful strokes, then rinse well. No post-shave lotions or potions (except maybe aloe vera) on this portion of your body!

Armpits have glands that produce sweat, but they also have other glands that produce a milky kind of secretion that mixes with bacteria to cause body odor. If you are enjoying the great outdoors, it does not matter how much you sweat–the bears and bees are quite happy with how you smell though have or have not smooth underarms. Indoors, of course, it is a different matter. To keep your pits dry and sweet smelling, here are some recommendations from Richard L. Dobson, M.D., and professor of dermatology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Use the razor blade to stroke from the top of the underarm to the bottom if it,

until you start to feel the hair resisting the razor blade. Rinse the razor blade. Overlap the next stroke where your previous stroke ended to have smooth underarms.

Continue to follow through with smooth strokes until you feel the resistance against the razor blade and rinse. Repeat each stroke until you shave the entire armpit. Rinse the armpit and lather it up again to have smooth underarms. This time, shave the underarm from bottom to top, overlapping your strokes. Rinse again upon completion. Every time a woman shaves her underarms, she removes some of the outer protective layer of skin.

If deodorants or antiperspirants are applied right away, that can be irritating. So allow a little bit of recovery time, says Dr. Dobson. If you are shaving under your arms, do so at night, and then wait until morning to apply your underarm product. In other battery operated machine case, start shaving with the battery-operated razor at the top of the underarm where the hair starts to have smooth underarms. Overlap the next stroke where your previous stroke ended. Continue to follow through with smooth strokes until you feel the resistance against the razor.
