Sinusitis: Foods to Eat and Avoid

Diet for Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a very troublesome syndrome and can leave a person heavy headed, exhausted and lousy the entire day. In addition to being affected by symptoms like colds, flu and sudden coughs, individuals with sinus need to be very careful of what they eat in order to avoid aggravating the condition.

Sinus is a condition that causes the facial bones to swell. If you have sinus, you need to understand that you cannot rid yourself off the syndrome by just staying away from cold foods. There are a few other items that you need to avoid in your diet as well.

Must Avoid Items: Too much salt in the body tends to rid it off calcium which otherwise helps in reducing inflammation in any part of the body. In addition to this, large quantities of salt can cause more water to accumulate inside the body.

If you think spicy foods can help you if you have sinus, you are wrong. Spicy foods can cause acidity which in turn can aggravate sinusitis and its related symptoms. If you suffer from both sinusitis and acidity, avoid hot and spicy foods at all costs.

Consumption of simple sugars needs to be decreased if not avoided completely. Simple sugars come in the form of bread (wheat, white and brown varieties), pastas and sugar etc.  and can alleviate the production of mucous in the body. An individual with chronic bouts of sinusitis should refrain from using simple sugars in any part of his/her diet.

Must have foods: Vitamin A helps you to recover from sinusitis and its related symptoms faster. Foods that are rich in Vitamin A help to rebuild the damaged mucous membranes in the body that in turn help in battling sinusitis. Some very good sources of Vitamin A include sweet potatoes, mangoes, carrots, oranges, tomatoes, pumpkins and broccoli leaves.

Although milk helps in healing from sinusitis, many individuals have an adverse allergic reaction that can lead to the same condition. Hence, milk is only recommended for those who don’t have allergic side reactions to it.

Individuals suffering from sinusitis need to add plenty of foods that have Vitamin C in them. Vitamin C helps in boosting the body’s immune system and some good sources of the same include lemons, strawberries, broccoli, guavas, papayas and oranges.
