When a woman ceases to naturally menstruate on reaching a specific age, it is said that she has achieved the state of Menopause. During the transition period when menstruation is about to stop, the cycles will be irregular and finally ending in cessation of period.
The symptoms of menopause vary from one woman to the other. While some women may have a number of symptoms, others do not show any kind of symptoms. Thus there is a significant variation in the occurrence and severity of symptoms in women. The main symptoms are given below:
Vaginal bleeding may occur irregularly during Menopause. While some females experience minor problems with these abnormal bleeding, but some people suffer from excessive bleeding. For some, the periods may be shorter, or they may occur farther and farther from one period to the other, before completely stopping. This symptom is associated with reduction in fertility, though some females can be pregnant even at this stage.
During Menopause females experience hot flushes. This is a feeling of hotness spreading over entire body, though centered on chest and head. These flushes can be followed by sweating. They last from just 30 seconds to some minutes. Hot flushes are accompanied by sweat during nights, leading to sleeping difficulties and tiredness.
Vagina can become dry, thin and less elastic, with the fall of Estrogen levels. Itching and vaginal dryness can cause pain during intercourse. These can also lead to many infections in the vagina.
Urinal discharge also is affected during menopause, since the urethral linings also become dry and thin which can result in more infections of the urinary tract, frequent urination, leakage, sudden urges to urinate, straining when coughing or laughing.
Emotional symptoms like memory problems, irritated behavior, mood-swings and fatigue can occur during Menopause because of the hormonal changes.
Many females put on weight after Menopause. Fat distribution in the body undergoes change, even as more fat accumulates in hips, abdomen, and thighs. Females may feel changes in their skin, with wrinkles and appearance of adult Acne. Some women grow body hair especially on chin, upper lip, abdomen or chest.
