Shampooing Your Hair The Right Way

Clean shiny hair is the sign of good health. Shampoos are meant to clean the hair and scalp, remove dirt and grime without removing much of the natural sebum. The preferable type of shampoo would be one which helps hair maintain natural pH level while making the hair easily manageable.

Choose the appropriate shampoo and conditioner for your type of hair by trial and error as these products are not the one size fits all kind.

Method of properly shampooing your hair

Select the correct shampoo depending on your hair type. Herbal Essence Shampoos would be a better choice if you are not very sure.

Next step is to thoroughly moisten scalp and hair using cool or tepid water. Warm water is preferable as hot water tends to dry out the scalp and hair.

Pour a small amount of the shampoo onto your palms and rub both hands together to evenly distribute the shampoo. Rub first onto your scalp and then spread over hair.

Use the tips of your fingers to work out a good lather. Avoid rubbing with your fingernails as this could damage the scalp.

With circular movements, gently rotate the scalp. Do not rotate hair. Work your way towards the tips of the hair

Rinse off with cold or tepid water.

Conditioning the hair after shampoo;

After thoroughly removing all traces of shampoo with cold or warm water, it is a good idea to use conditioner to retain the moisture in the hair.

Pour a few drops of the conditioner into the palm of one hand.  Rub palms together and evenly distribute the conditioner.

Apply the conditioner on the centre part of the hair shaft working down to the tips, Conditioners should never be massaged into the scalp.

Leave for about 2-4 minutes to smooth the cuticle.

Rinse thoroughly with cold or warm water.

After shampooing and conditioning your hair, dab dry the excess water with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing while the hair is still wet as the hair is generally weak after washing and tends to break with vigorous movements.
