Selecting a Car Seat for Your Baby

Adults have been saved from serious accidents because they were wearing a seat belt. This is a necessary safety measure. Babies too need to travel with all safety precautions in a car, because they cannot express themselves. It is our prerogative to ensure they are safely ensconced. It is best to put the baby on the back seat in a special seat and facing the rear of the car.
While you are excited to get the nursery ready for the little one, equally important is the car seat for the baby. You must know how to handle it well before you have to use it. Besides the seat being firmly fixed to the back seat, the baby too must have a belt to keep it securely in place.
We take a lot of care in the first three months to prop a baby up and support its head. If the car seat does not have a head support, ensure that a baby blanket is rolled up tight and provides support so that the head of the baby is held in position and does not roll about.
It is never advisable to put your baby on the front seat. Some cars come fitted with a passenger side air bag. In the event of an accident, this will expand forcefully and this could endanger the life or even kill the baby even if it is placed in a car seat. It is best to place the baby on the back seat rear facing.
Sometimes the baby may be sick or being driven to a doctor. It would be best for an adult to sit in the back to attend to the baby. The driver could be distracted, if the driver is constantly looking at the back, and may end up in an accident, because things happen so fast and it is essential for the driver to have his eyes fixed on the road.
Babies up to a year should be in a rear facing position. This is the most protective for the child. Do not put them in a regular seat, with a seat belt, even if they are slightly big for their age.
While you would love to hold and cuddle the little one, there is a time and place for it. Definitely not when driving in a car. There are too many risks.
