Safety Tips for Laser Hair Removal

August 18, 2009

laserhairremovingLaser hair removal is a fairly new method used to permanently remove hair on a person’s body that the person feels is unattractive.  The treatment is quick and painless.  It really sounds like a miracle treatment.

Just several zaps with a laser can remove unwanted hair that has been plaguing people for years.

But the use of a laser typically raises some questions.  The first question is how safe can a laser procedure be?  And of course, with any procedure, people want to know if there are any risks or side effects.

The media has done a great job of hyping up laser hair removal.  There are magazine and newspaper advertisements of people with beautifully smooth, hairless and unmarred skin.

But there are some side effects to the laser hair removal procedure.  After treating an area the skin can become red and irritated.  But then again, no medical remedy is guaranteed to be 100% safe.  So knowing this, the question still arises.  How safe is laser hair removal?

Many laser hair removal centers have popped up due to the recent hype and popularity.  Before a person agrees to the procedure they should talk with one of the laser hair clinic consultants.

Ask questions about client satisfaction and what the course of action is if a client is not satisfied with the procedure.  Find out what the risks are.  Remember that the risks vary per person based on the person’s skin type, hair type, location on the body, etc.

While it is the staff’s duty to tell you the truth, their response will more than likely be biased towards positive results.  Also, talk to people who have had laser hair removal performed and get their opinion of the procedure and which clinic they went to.

How does the procedure work?

During a laser hair treatment procedure the doctor aims a laser at the skin in the area where the undesirable hair is.  The laser causes the skin to become hot and the hair follicles are heated up below the skin at the root.

This heat creates a thermal reaction that kills the hair at the root.  If a person knows that their skin is sensitive they should talk to a dermatologist prior to having the procedure done to learn about possible side effects on sensitive skin.

People with a darker skin tone are more apt to having side effects.  People with dark skin are able to absorb light better than people with light skin so the laser’s affect is much stronger.

This applies to people with a tan as well.  If a person is normally light skinned, it is best that they don’t tan several weeks prior to having the procedure performed.

It is best to do research prior to beginning a laser hair removal procedure.  The finished product may be alluring but it is also important to consider possible side effects.
