Risks to Pregnant Teens

There are many factors that influence a teenager’s life, such as the economy, peer pressure or the absence of a parent. Teenage girls are very vulnerable and look for ways to gain love and approval. Sadly, many teenager girls do not have enough guidance and as a result, they get themselves into trouble. One kind of trouble they find themselves in is teenage pregnancy.
They enter their teenage years as scared, unconfident young girls looking for acceptance. They meet a teenage boy that shows them the attention they need and before they know it, they find themselves as mothers-to-be. Teenage pregnancy is sad, scary and dangerous for both the teenage mother and the unborn child. Following are some of the risks of teenage pregnancy.
When a teenage girl becomes pregnant, her body is not even fully developed to care for herself. Now her body is faced with the pressures of caring for a second person. The first trimester is a dangerous time for any women but it is especially dangerous for a teenage mother.
At this time, because the young girl does not know how to properly care for her body, she puts her fetus at risk. Her bones and muscles are not fully developed and the shock of a fetus can cause damage to both her body and the fetus’s. Teenage mothers are at a higher risk for premature deliveries as well as still-born babies.
A premature child will be underweight and may not be fully developed. The newborn is also at risk for physical and physiological damage such as mental retardation, autism, weak bones, and sensory-motor development problems. Teenage girls often get pregnant because there is not the proper parental guidance at home.
When she has a baby, she brings the newborn child into these circumstances, which can further the cycle of the teenager’s child becoming a teenage parent. Another risk is that because a young, teenage girl is new to sex and either uneducated or not properly informed, she risks contracting a sexually transmitted disease. These diseases can be passed along to the fetus.
