Right Walking Habits

walking-habitsWalking is a simple, great, natural way to keep fit and maintain health. Regular walking for 30 minutes to an hour daily, can help to keep heart disease, type II diabetes, breast and colon cancer at bay.

Let me enlighten you on the right walking techniques.

If you are walking to keep your weight off, walk at a moderate pace and walk daily. If you walk 30-60 minutes daily, it will burn stored fat and build muscle to speed up your metabolism. Best part is that it will also reduce risks of heart disease, breast cancer, colon cancer, diabetes and stroke.

There are some mistakes we often commit while walking. Awareness and development of right posture for walking is essential so that you will be able to breathe well and prevent back, neck, and shoulders problem.

Let me point put a few. Don’t take big steps and overstress yourself. This leads to clumsy gait and it feels hard on the feet. Take small shorter and quicker steps. Put on the right shoe. Some walking shoes cause plantar fasciitis, muscle pulls and knee problems. Wear light shoes that are also flexible.

Don’t swing your hands too much. Keep your elbows close to your body and swing your arms to-and-fro. Your hands should not swing more than the center line and no further than your breasts. This will help you concentrate on the power from your rear leg without wasting motion in front of your body. Your feet move as fast as your arm!

Look up, don’t hang your head down and don’t always look down as if the whole weight of the world is on your shoulder. Your chin should be parallel to the ground and your eye should focus on the street 10-20 feet ahead.

Do not walk with a forward lean. While walking stand up straight with relaxed shoulders. Don’t bend your back into an unnatural curve.

Wear right clothes. Choose mesh reflective safety vest and shoes with reflective elements. Done wear cotton, chose an inner layer that will wick sweat away from your body to evaporate. Hats are a must!

While walking, drink a cup or more of water every 20 minutes. Avoid caffeinated beverages this will cause you to lose fluid and make you feel frequently thirsty.
