Reversing the Sun’s Unwanted Effects
June 24, 2009
To see the sun peeking out from cloudy sky is undeniably heartwarming. The sun is equally welcome on the cold, frigid days of winter. Everyone loves the sun because it gives us light after a long, dark night and warmth after a cold winter’s night.
However, the sun can cause some unwanted effects on our skin when it burns us to a crisp, leaving behind reddened, painful skin, ugly freckles, and unwanted darkened skin. We have a few natural remedies to share that will help you deal with the damages the sun left behind.
Red, painful sunburns
Prolonged exposure to those ultra-violet rays can burn your skin, leaving it red, painful, and tight. Try the following remedies to help your sore skin: cucumbers will soothe sunburn beautifully.
After peeling 1 cucumber, extract its juice and mix it with ½ tsp of rose water and ½ tsp of glycerin. Dab this mixture on your skin, and you will feel cooler because it takes the “burn” out.
You can also soak cucumber slices in cold milk for several hours and then rub onto your face; mix equal parts of limewater and linseed oil, and then apply to face; mix 1 egg white with honey and witch hazel to make a mask. Apply this mixture to your face.
Millions of freckles
Many people exposed to the sun for long periods of time get freckles on their skin and they are usually not welcome there.
Dab limejuice or buttermilk on freckles and let it sit until dry, mix 4 tablespoons of grated radish and several drops of vinegar to make a paste. Apply this paste to your skin to bleach freckles. Boil green beans, and then mash them, apply to freckled areas. Mix 1 ounce of rum with 2 ounces of lemon juice. Apply to freckled areas.
Stir 1 ounce of horseradish into ½ liter of buttermilk. Boil this mixture for 1 hour. Strain the mixture, let it cool, and then apply it to freckles to bleach; mix 5 ounces of lemon juice and 60 grains of borax to make a paste. Apply this paste to freckles at bedtime.
Darkened, drab skin
For people who have had their skin darkened by sunning (and don’t want it that way), the sunburn remedies above will also have a bleaching effect on the skin.
They work best on oily skin because of their drying effect. If you have dry skin and decide to try the sunburn remedies, be sure to use a good moisturizer afterward.
For bleaching dry skin, try the following remedies: soak 1 lemon slice in 1 cup of milk. Strain the milk and apply it to face (this works equally well if you use a bit of bicarbonate of soda in place of the lemon); sprinkle freshly washed grapes with salt and alum powder. Wrap in foil and bake for 20 minutes. After they cool a bit, extract the juice and wash your face with it.
