Relax With Massage Therapy

July 31, 2008

Stress, whether at the work place or at home can be physically draining and emotionally overwhelming. What one needs is some special massage therapy to relieve the stress and help us relax, with a sense of well-being and contentment. It also helps to rejuvenate the mind recharge the body, well worth the time and money spent on having it done. An ancient healing art, massage therapy feels wonderfully self-indulgent without feeling guilty.

A good masseuse with quick, nimble fingers can de-stress by releasing and relaxing tightly constricted muscles and restricted movement, oxygenate the body by helping with the shallow breathing, a part of stressful situations. It also improves blood circulation, so that blood flows freely throughout the body, decreases fatigue, releases pressure on nerves, and eliminates toxins that have built up in the body.

That is not all; massage therapy also helps more nutrients reach the cells and helps the body’s organs to function properly. An exchange of energy takes place during massage, which works to relieve physical and mental stress. Physically and psychologically soothing, one can compare it to going to sleep and waking up refreshed. People feel so peaceful and relaxed that many fall asleep while being massaged.

There are many types of massage therapies that are popular, from Swedish massage to improve blood circulation and alleviate muscle soreness and stiffness to Deep Tissue Massage is characterized by slow, deep penetrating movements to improve flexibility and release tightly blocked areas. There is even Sports Massage that concentrates on particular muscle groups to increase performance and endurance.

However, Ayurveda a natural health care system originating in India incorporates massage, yoga, meditation and herbal remedies in their massage therapy. Ayurvedic massage or Abhyanga is usually performed by one or two therapists who use a heated blend of herbal oils based on the ayurvedic system of body humours. Scented oils extracted from flowers, herbs and spices are used in conjunction with soothing techniques, such as, warm stones to relieve all degrees of tension and stress. Clay masks, sea salt scrubs are all used focusing on the skin texture and to moisturise it.

India, fast becoming the hub of medical tourism has many luxury ayurvedic massage resorts and centres, of which some of the most popular are in Kerala, which is in south India, also known as God’s Own Country. They offer a wide menu of ayurvedic oil massages and cures and people come from far and wide to get ayurvedic treatment for ailments ranging from the serious to the not so serious e.g. headaches, de-stressing, severe migraines, losing weight, arthritis, rheumatism, and diseases like breathing problems, stiff joints and backaches. The locals have such immense faith in Ayurveda that they prefer to get ayurvedic treatments for diseases like jaundice, common fever and others, including snake and insect bites.

Make your choice of massage treatment required and then give yourself to the luxury of being given massage therapy by a well trained and experienced masseuse. Say good-bye to stress and enjoy being pummelled and stroked into refreshing sleep and good health!
