Puffy Face
July 6, 2009
Puffiness in your face usually occurs overnight. You could wake up in the morning and wonder who the person is staring back at you in the mirror.
Most people just throw on a bit of makeup and get on with their day, figuring it’s a weird quirk of the human body and there’s nothing they could do to prevent it. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent your face from looking puffy and bloated.
Your face is a window into your health. The human body actually provides signs that something we’re doing isn’t healthy. Trouble arises because most of us ignore these signs, or simply don’t notice them, until either they go away or it’s too late.
Your face is a lot quicker in giving these warnings than the rest of your body. It could take years for your body to put on extra weight because you’re eating junk food and not exercising.
Your liver could be fine for decades until all that alcohol catches up with you. Smokers may not develop cancer for years. Your face, on the other hand, usually lets your know you did something wrong just yesterday.
That fatty burger at lunch and all those soft drinks throughout the day can result in a puffy face the next morning.
Sometimes a puffy face indicates you’re simply dehydrated. Our bodies hold on to water when we don’t drink enough. This causes blood vessels to engorge, making your face puffy.
You can stop this from happening by drinking a glass of water before bed every night. An easy way to remind yourself to take that last drink is by keeping a bottle of water on your nightstand. If, in the morning, your face has puffed up, drink some water immediately.
Avoid drinks like tea, coffee, and soda, as these have caffeine in them and could dehydrate you more. If your face is puffy and you think it may be dehydration, the easiest solution is passing on the stimulant-containing beverages and sticking with water throughout the day.
Your diet can affect your face as well. A diet high in fat or low in beta-carotene or vitamin C can cause a puffy face.
There’s a simple remedy, though. You can quickly re-nourish your body and face with watermelon juice. Stick a slice in a blender, seeds, and all, and then strain it. Drink down the juice and you’ll feel better almost instantly.
If your face is ever puffy when you wake up, pay attention. Your body is trying to tell you something.
