Protein that shield against HIV can be the new cure

Washington – In a recent advancement regarding finding a solution for HIV, scientists are working on protein that limits the release of the HIV-1 virus from human cells.
Researchers have known about a aspect that controls the release of virus particles from most human cells, but were unsure about its individuality.
Now it has been documented as a CAML (calcium-modulating cyclophilin ligand) – a cellular protein – by a team from Emory and Vanderbilt Universities and Mayo Medical School.
CAML (calcium-modulating cyclophilin ligand) works by restraining a late step in the virus life cycle that allows maintenance of HIV particles on cell membrane. The virus has developed a means of counteracting CAML(calcium-modulating cyclophilin ligand), all the way through the viral Vpu protein.
When the research team striped human cells of CAML (calcium-modulating cyclophilin ligand) in the lab, they found that Vpu was no longer required for the well-organized exit of HIV-1 particles from the cell.
‘This research is significant because it identifies CAML as an innate defense mechanism next to HIV,’ said senior author Paul Spearman.
‘We are continuing to work on the mechanism that Vpu uses to counteract CAML and on defining exactly how CAML leads to virus particle retention on the infected cell membrane. We hope this will lead us to new treatments.’
Findings of the research have been available in the progress online edition of the journal Nature Medicine.
