Prostate Cancer – Symptoms

In view of the unique location of prostate glands, prostate cancer comes with a number of exclusive symptoms. The prostate is just underneath the bladder in the lower portion of the pelvis. Urine when emptied from the bladder goes through the urethra. At the urethral head, just as urine comes out of bladder, it goes directly through the prostate.

When the prostate is affected by cancer, it tends to enlarge and tightly compresses the urethra, resulting in the primary symptoms of frequent urination, the feeling of urgency to pass water, and waking often during the night to pass urine.

Prostate cancer isn’t the only reason for these symptoms, but it is an important cause of prostate enlargement which manifests itself as described.

Apart from the above, there are other symptoms of prostate cancer, including presence of blood in the urine or semen, erectile dysfunction, pain in the lower back, hips and ribs and loss of control over the bladder.

When should you visit the doctor with such symptoms? If you are over 40, it is important to see your physician when any of these symptoms occur. Although African American men are known to be more prone to this cancer than others, if you are over 40, it is important to see a doctor.

Remember any of the above symptoms are not normal, and thus requires a doctor’s evaluation. More so, if they have presented over a short period of time. You have to undergo simple tests to determine why these symptoms are occurring, and whether there is a possibility of prostate cancer.

But remember, most people diagnosed with cancer may not have had any of these symptoms. If you have seen the doctor before the onset of these symptoms, it is possible to detect cancer at a very early stage. For this a PSA test is conducted on your blood. Just be sure to consult a doctor if you have any of the above mentioned symptoms.

Remember prostate cancer can have a huge impact on your marital life and ordinary day- to-day living. Instead of living with the symptoms, or ignoring them, you should insist that your doctor does a blood test and also carries out a physical examination to rule out the possibility of the cancer.
