Prescription Free Pressure Release
October 16, 2008
Many of us are averse to medication. We’d rather endure the pain, than pop a prescription or over the counter pill, into our mouths. This may be doable for headaches and muscle pains, but is it possible to also lower our blood pressure without medication? Yes, it is possible. Researchers have found that physical activity, a healthy diet, meditation, and quality sleep can lower blood pressure.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
It’s not often that we’d consider errands such as collecting the mail, raking leaves, shoveling snow, grocery shopping, and gardening, enjoyable. However, such activities burn calories, without over exertion, thus making them superb methods of lowering blood pressure, and relieving stress. Likewise, leisure activities such as bicycling, dancing, swimming and even walking, will have the same effect, but in a much shorter time frame.
HEALTHY DIET
It’s a no-brainer that foods with high salt contribute to hypertension, and are therefore ill advised; but there are other simple dietary changes that we can make to lower our blood pressure. Replacing saturated fats, fatty dairy, red meat, and processed and cholesterol high foods, with fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, whole grains and lean meats, also facilitates the lowering of blood pressure.
MEDITATION
We all know of the great feud between medical practitioners and alternative medicine gurus, but the research is in, and it proves that regular transcendental meditation decreases vasoconstriction, eliminates stress, and aids in the prevention of atherosclerosis, three promoters of high blood pressure. Meditation for hypertension simply entails deep breathing in a quiet, assuasive and stress free environment, devoid of distractions.
QUALITY SLEEP
Since childhood, we’ve heard that sleep promotes health and well being, but we’ve dismissed it as an old wife’s tale. Recently, however, researchers have identified that interrupted, disordered, and inadequate sleep contributes to, among other things, high blood pressure. An easy fix to lowering blood pressure; tweak the alarm clocks, unplug the phone, and replace the pillow.
Although it appears impossible, there are a number of methods by which we can lower our blood pressure, without the use of medications. Methods that are not meant to replace prescribed medical treatments, but rather, to aid them. Physical activity, healthy diet, meditation and quality sleep, serve not only to lower blood pressure, but also to enhance and improve the many interrelated aspects of our lives.
