Presbyopia
As we age, everything about us seems to age as well. Diseases can attack our eyes as well as disorders. One of the disorders that can attack us is presbyopia. This disorder usually attacks after the age of forty and is caused by the loss of flexibility in the eye.
Tissue layers build up in the eye around the lens and causes you to loose the ability to see close up from the loss of elasticity to the eye. Some of the causes for this disorder are genetics, diet, age, stress and your personality. The development of your vision is actually affected by the way that you live your life.
A few of the things that may be signs you have presbyopia are blurred vision, headaches and even if you have to start holding things at a distance in order to be able to read them. Your optometrist will be able to perform a few simple tests to conclude if you have this condition.
Some of them are, but not limited to, visual acuity, a refraction test, retinal examination, sit-lamp and even a muscle integrity test. The usual way to correct this is by having the patient wear glasses and or contact lenses.
Because we cannot predict how our bodies are going to act as we age, it is almost impossible to say how you can prevent this from happening. One of the important factors is to keep the stress in your life to a minimum. Yes, this is easier said than done but, it is important to learn how to manage it. Proper diet and exercise is also an important factor as well. An aerobic routine can be quite helpful. Also, if you work on the computer as your way to make a living, look away periodically. Looking at the screen for long periods of time puts a lot of strain on your eyes.
One last thing, try to rinse your eyes with water at least twice a day. This will help to keep them clean and keep you refreshed as well. These may not prevent the disorder but they can help to head it off at the pass and reduce your risk.
