Make sure your children have had some supervised time away from you before they enter school. This may be a day care or preschool experience or with friends or relatives. Demands made on children today are much greater than in previous generations. To be able to achieve the maximum amount, the child needs a consistent, loving home and an opportunity of developing all the senses to the utmost. Never use school as a threat, such as, “You can’t go to school today because you are bad,” or “You have to go to school today to learn how to mind.” Parents and schools should be perceived as people and places that show unconditional love.

Letting your children occasionally stay overnight away from home develops more independence among young children. Talk to your child about going to school. Tell them about positive experiences you remember from your first days of school. Talk to them about what they’ll learn in school. Take your child to visit the school on a few occasions. Show your child where they will be going and find out where the important places are in the school. (Classroom, toilets, canteen, office) Answer any questions they may have openly and honestly reassuring them that everything is OK

Attend orientation, buddy and transition programs at the school if they have these available. If possible, tell him the principal’s name, the names of his teachers and introduce him to those people. Assure him that it is natural to be frightened. Everyone is here to be his friend. The child must be secure in his home from where he can explore his surroundings and enjoy different experiences.

Once you send a kid to school successfully, you can encourage them in many ways such as –

· Acknowledging their achievements and successes

· Asking them about their day at school

· Ensuring they maintain a healthy diet

· Showing that you care for them

· Encouraging them to take increasing responsibility for their own learning

· Helping them maintain a balanced lifestyle with regular exercise

· Helping them to develop their organizational skills
