Prepare for your twins

It is very demanding to cater for just a single child. There are a host of things you have to do before the day comes to an end: bath him, feed him cuddle him etc. Now imagine having to do that in multiples. Taking care of twins is so demanding that most mothers confess it pushes them right to the edge. Once you are told you will be having twins, you must start preparing yourself on all fronts: physically, financially, psychologically, etc.
Signs of twins
The hormone that indicates that you are pregnant is known as HcG. It starts appearing in your urine 10 days after conception. HcG increases more rapidly in people who carry twins than in those who carry single babies. This peaks at around 10 weeks. The best way to find out early is to have an ultrasound around 11 to 13 weeks.
Another way is to have an alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test. This measure a certain protein secreted by the liver of the fetus. When AFP levels are abnormally high, you know for sure you might be having twins or more.
What to expect once you know
When you are told that multiple birth pregnancies are high risk, it doesn’t mean you should start panicking. This is what you should expect. You will gain considerable weight in the first three months. Good nutrition is necessary since in a lot of cases twins arrive preterm.
You will experience a lot of morning sickness.
During the first term you will experience a lot of fatigue.
Fetal movement starts earlier in multiple pregnancies although experts disagree with this.
What you must do.
You need a lot of help from friends and family a few weeks before and after delivery. You must therefore develop a network for support. You have to meet and discuss with every person you expect to be in this group so that they can see the role you want them to play clearly in order to avoid conflicts and confusions. This will reduce the stress getting to the end of the pregnancy.
