Pregnancy Mask – Hyper-pigmentation – Skin Discoloration

What is Pregnancy mask?
Pregnancy is the period when many hormonal changes take place in the body. Pregnancy related disorders and discomfort would set in. While some of the disorders would fade away soon after pregnancy, others would continue for quite some time.
Skin discoloration, also called pregnancy mask, is one such disorder, which haunts the pregnant for quite some time even after pregnancy. In some cases it may result in hyper-pigmentation, caused due to use of birth control pills, skin trauma due to over use of facial creams, perfumes etc.
What is the cure?
There are many ingredients, which are required to fight discoloration and some of them are Vitamin A, AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid), Vitamin C, Kinetin, Algae etc.
The combined action of these ingredients would help to fight discoloration. This process would take quite some time, some times some years. However, for quick result, they have found a synthetic skin-lightening ingredient called Hydroquinone.
This is a strong discoloration treatment. Hydroquinone breaks the melanin into small pieces, which we cannot see with naked eyes. It brings this to the surface of the skin as a dead tissue and then it is naturally peeled off.
However, here is a word of caution! In some cases, it has its serious side effects. Hydroquinone is so strong that in some it may cause lightening of the skin called hypo-pigmentation or called white spots.
Therefore, some doctors suggest applying Hydroquinone for some times, say six months, and then stop its use. If you achieve desired results, then stop its use and while going out, use sunscreen as otherwise the spots may return.
One of the characteristics of the skin is that in some cases, it gets worse and then it starts to get better. Pigmentation indicates the impurities are pulled from the body to the surface of the skin. But, gradually the skin will return to the normal.
The alternative to this is to treat the skin with natural medicines like mulberry etc. There are many medicines, based on mulberry and other natural components. The reactions of the skin to these medicines are slow, of course, but it avoids hyper-pigmentation. Sunscreens are not required. There are no side effects.
