Pregnancy and Tanning Beds
November 9, 2009
Pregnancy is the time when the ‘would be’ mother has to exercise care about her health condition. This is in the interest of the baby in her womb. Many times, there are many “do’s” and “don’ts” for a pregnant woman.
One such “don’t” is regarding using a tanning bed. There is a section of experts, who says that tanning bed is not healthy during pregnancy. But, others doubt this claim. Here is a brief discussion on this issue.
1. Using Tanning bed is in the list of don’ts. Doctors are of the opinion that if a woman uses tanning bed, then it harms the fetus in her womb. However, some argue that of course there is no evidence to show that tanning bed increases the risk of having malignant melanoma.
They argue that rays of tanning bed would not reach the fetus. Hence, they say it is not harmful. Many salons will allow a pregnant woman on tanning bed after production of an opinion of the doctor.
2. Some doctors advice, that if the woman is unable to avoid tanning bed while being pregnant, she would do well to limit its use. This is because some theoretically argue that tanning beds are detrimental for the health of the fetus.
3. We generally fear that if a pregnant woman uses tanning bed, the rays would cause deficiency of folic acid. This deficiency would lead to neural tube defect and lead to ‘Spina Bifida’.
Nevertheless, in most of western countries women decide to take folic acid supplements. It is advisable for them to take leafy vegetables, which are rich in folic acid. Broccoli and Spinach are the leafy vegetables that are rich in folic acid.
4. Another problem with tanning bed is that, it may instigate the pregnant women for over eating. The over eating (hyperthermia) may become the cause for spinal defects in the unborn.
However, experts say that the hyperthermia would set in for pregnant women exposed to high temperature in the tanning bed. Therefore, a woman who exposes for a lesser period and for lower temperature in the tanning bed is unaffected in any manner by the tanning bed.
5. Tanning beds are likely to make the skin more sensitive, which may lead to hormonal changes. This would seriously affect the health of the child.
