Pre eclampsia
Pre-eclampsia is a condition that occurs in pregnancy in which the mother-to-be is diagnosed with hypertension, high blood pressure, oedema and there is a significant amount of protein in the urine. This arises after the 28th week of pregnancy and can occur in 5-10% of the cases. Women who have kidney disease, obesity, diabetes and blood pressure have more chances of developing pre-eclampsia.
The symptoms can be swollen ankles in most of the cases, while in some cases there can be headaches, distorted vision, abdominal pain, feeling of nausea and vomiting. Women below 20 and above 35 have more chances of developing this condition and it usually happens during the first pregnancy. These symptoms should not be ignored even if the woman is feeling physically well. If pre-eclampsia is not diagnosed and treated, it can develop into eclampsia which is even more fatal. In this, the woman can have convulsions, brain haemorrhage, kidney or liver failure and it can also result in the death of the baby or the mother.
It is very important that one goes for regular antenatal check-ups. The urine sample should be checked for protein every two weeks after the 28th week of pregnancy and after the 36th week, it should be on weekly basis. Along with this, the blood pressure should also be checked.
The treatment can differ for each person depending on the severity of the case. In mild cases, one needs to be on bed rest with medicines for regulating the blood-pressure if required, whereas in certain cases the woman is required to be admitted in the hospital for observation and regular urine and blood pressure tests. To cure this condition the baby has to be delivered in severe cases and for that the women have to opt for a Caesarean.
Pre-eclampsia is more common in the first pregnancy and is less likely in the second one. However, if the woman already had high blood-pressure or kidney disease prior to the first pregnancy, there are chances for this condition to develop in the second pregnancy too.
