Perfect Mood Enhancing Colours
August 1, 2008
Carefully applied colour in the home makes an immediate and lasting visual impact. An array of mood-changing associations, your colour scheme should complement the space and suit personal colour preferences.
Before opting for any colour scheme, space must always be considered first. You can always brighten up dark rooms with light-coloured walls, accessorised with white voile curtains and plenty of green plants. Tiny rooms can be made to look spacious with cool pastel shades, accessorised with minimal light-coloured furniture. Boxy rooms need a focal point e.g. a feature wall contrasted with an attention-grabbing piece of furniture or artwork.
Understanding the qualities of primary and secondary colours and how they work together, gives one a better understanding of how to apply them in the home. Red, yellow and blue are primary colours, while orange, green and violet are secondary.
Deep, warm colours including red, red-violet, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange and yellow lend any room intimate cosiness. On the other hand, light, cool colours like green, blue-green, blue and blue-violet add space and make a room look elegant, likewise pale neutral shades.
Bright and bold red suggests vitality and aggressiveness. A great accent colour, it makes cold, open rooms seem more intimately inviting. Deep, subtle shades of red, such as, burgundy and maroon are perfect for living rooms complemented with green.
Green, the colour of nature, refreshing and pleasing to the eye makes dim rooms seem more vibrant by bringing a garden-like atmosphere indoors and the varying shades of green make it work in just about any room.
Stimulating, sunny and cheerful, yellow is associated with intellect, power and creative energy. Bright yellows brings warmth and light into dark rooms, while pale yellows make small rooms seem bigger. A wonderful kitchen colour it is complemented with violet.
A powerful accent colour, strong and majestic violet / purple, takes on mood characteristics of red or blue depending on which is more prominent. For example, pastel violets like Lilac take on blue characteristics, while lavender takes on red qualities, with yellow being their complementary colour.
Denoting harmony, peace, steadfastness and loyalty, the colour blue while appropriate for any room, is an excellent bedroom colour making one feel calm, cool and serene. It also softens over-bright rooms and is complemented with the colour orange.
Orange combines the energy of red with the intellectual associations of yellow. Dominant and lively, orange is a vibrant choice for bathrooms and work areas. Peachy oranges have a delicate effect, while brownish oranges such as terracotta give off warm vibes, best
The best and easiest way to decide on colour schemes for your home is to start off with a relatively blank canvas of fairly neutral permanent fixtures like sofas and floor coverings. They don’t have to be in dull and boring shades, as you can use rich but neutral colours like chocolate and versatile stone. These shades work wonderfully with accent colours running through the home accessories e.g. curtains, cushions, lamps, candles, blankets, rugs and pictures.
