Parasitic Worms
July 25, 2009
More than 25% of people in the world are infected by parasitic worms. Parasitic worms are long invertebrate organisms that are either round or flat. They live inside the bodies of their host and feed on the nutrients that the host takes in. This means that parasitic worms steal the food you eat at the point your body is about to absorb it. Parasitic worms can cause serious damage.
How they get into the body
You can get worms by eating meat that is not well cooked, especially beef and pork; and by drinking contaminated water. Parasitic worms are commonly found in those parts of the world where hygiene is poor and regulations on food are almost nonexistent.
Types of parasitic worms
The most common of all worms is roundworm. It is also called ascaris. Over one billion people in the world are infected by roundworm. They are commonly found in the intestines, but they can migrate to the lungs and the upper respiratory tract.
Ascaris can be unnoticed for a very long time. However, the following symptoms may occur in some patients: inflammation, fever, nutritional deficiencies, and diarrhea.
The second common type of worms is hookworm. It affects about one quarter of the total population of the world. Generally, hookworms are smaller than round worms, but their effect can be dangerous.
They can cause severe anemia because they suck blood from the intestinal walls of the host. The larvae of hookworms have teeth that enable them to penetrate the skin to enter the body.
The whipworm is another type of common worms. It is called so because it looks like a whip with a handle. They are between 2 to 3 inches long. They can cause bloody diarrhea and anemia.
Tapeworms
Tapeworms are the most dreaded type of common worms. They can grow up to about 9 meters long. They are common in beef and pork, so eating undercooked pork or beef may put you at a risk of contracting them. A tapeworm can live in the human intestine for many years. Some symptoms of tapeworm infection are weakness, loss of appetite, and nausea.
Treatment and prevention
Parasitic worms can be treated with medication. There are certain cases where surgery will be required to get rid of certain worms from certain tissues of the body.
You can prevent infection by practicing personal hygiene and cooking your food well before eating.
