Overcoming Depression
April 4, 2009
Are those ‘one of those days’ just not leaving you behind? Are you constantly negative? Do you have problem sleeping? Do you consider yourself unlovable and unworthy? Do you constantly blame yourself? Are you restless and do you have problem recalling? If you have answered ‘yes’ to all of these or mostly all of these questions, then you could be suffering from depression.
Life is not a bed of roses. We all have out share of bad days and good moments. Bad incidents loom large because we allow it to tower over us. So do not focus on your problem, so that it won’t have any power over you.
Instead focus on feelings or incidents that make you happy. Controlling one’s thoughts is one of the most crucial factors for coming out of depression.
If loneliness is leading you to get depressed then socialise more. Look for good intimate relationships with safe people that you can trust. Depression is a vicious circle. You don’t like the situation you are in, you focus on it and then depression comes in. Once you reach this stage it is difficult to muster new energy and resolute to change your life and eventually you will remain stuck in depression.
Some doctors suggest stopping any medication that can indirectly lead to depression e.g. tranquilizers or sleeping pills, high blood pressure medicines, oral contraceptives, some anti-inflammatory or anti-infection drugs, ulcer medicines, etc. Keep yourself occupied. Develop a habit or take up activities that interest you.
One of the most common reasons for depression is lack of enough interests and activities. Take up a new activity, this will contribute to higher self-esteem and happiness and make you satisfied and improve your mental health. It will also keep your mind off problems and negative thoughts and emotions. As difficult as it may sound, always try to keep a positive attitude.
You can do this by accepting the fact that sadness and suffering is a temporary and normal part of life. Keep realistic goals, work on personal problems but don’t be overwhelmed by them. And don’t be too hard on yourself when you fail. Failure is a part of life.
Many doctors and psychologists also highly recommend regular exercise. This will improve and refresh your mood and give you more energy. Relaxation techniques and meditation will also help.
We must always keep in mind that healing is a process. So be patient with yourself, you cannot be cured instantly.
