Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids

There has been a buzz about Omega-3 fatty acids and the benefits they have on human health. It has been touted as the ideal nutritional supplement.Omega-3 fatty acids are basically poly unsaturated fatty acids, when included in the diets of human beings are observed to bring in certain health benefits. They help lower the level of triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol levels in the body. They are beneficial to cardiovascular health.

Other benefits include helping to prevent cancer and also mood elevation. They help to prevent heart disease and controlling arthritis and boosting immunity. These fatty acids help to decrease the levels of LDL or bad cholesterol in the body and so are good for the heart. They also keep the brain and nervous system efficient.

Omega 3 cannot be synthesized by the body so we have to rely on external sources to reap its benefits.

One of the best known sources of Omega-3 is fish.  The rich sources are fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines etc. Health experts recommend eating fish at least twice a week.High levels of pollutants in water resources have increased the level of contaminants in fish like mercury, arsenic etc. The fear of ingesting these pollutants prevents many of us from making fish a regular feature in our diet. The better alternative is to go for fish oil supplements.

Flaxseed oil may be better alternative considering it is a vegetarian source and has little danger of contamination like fish oil. But it does not work in the same way and may not bring in the same benefits like fish oil.Flaxseed oil also contains Omega-3 fatty acids but while fish oil contains fatty acids known as DPA and EHA, flaxseed oil contains a fatty acid called ALA. This is broken down to DPA and EHA in the human body. The conversion of ALA takes time and requires certain conditions. Though the two have Omega-3 acids in them, they are distinct in the benefits they bring. It is wiser to incorporate both these oils in our diets.

Other sources of Omega-3 are kidney beans, tofu, and walnuts and even extra virgin olive oil. Incorporating these items in our diets will certainly improve the levels of these fatty acids in our body and bring positive benefits to our health.

Including sources of Omega-3 fatty acids in our diet will be a smart choice.
