Natural memory boosters
June 2, 2008
Fisetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid commonly found in strawberries and other fruits and vegetables, stimulates signaling pathways that enhance long-term memory, report researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in this week’s Online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The key brain chemical for memory is acetylcholine. A deficiency in this chemical is probably the single most common cause for declining memory.
Acetylcholine is derived from the nutrient choline and fish, particularly sardines, are rich in it, hence the old wives’ tale of fish being good for the brain. Eggs are also a major source of choline, followed by liver, soybeans, peanuts, and other nuts and ever since egg phobia set in, the average intake of choline from the diet has dropped dramatically. Fisetin is also great natural memory booster. Besides strawberries, fisetin is found in tomatoes, onions, oranges, apples, peaches, grapes, kiwifruit and persimmons. Gingko biloba leaves, while rich in other flavonoids, do not contain fisetin.
Overall, natural memory booster will act in these three important ways –
· Increases acetylcholine production.
· Boosts the number of receptors for acetylcholine.
· Improves communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
According to many healthcare providers, the best memory booster is represented by the supplements based on ginkgo biloba and the extract that is used in the composition of such supplements is obtained from the leaves of the ginkgo biloba tree.
However, before obtaining the extract that is added as an ingredient to these supplements, the leaves must undergo a certain process. The leaves contain ginkgolic acids those are believed to be poisonous and this is why they must be processed. On the other hand, eating strawberries sounds like an enjoyable alternative to popping a pill, experts caution that it would take about 10 pounds a day to achieve a beneficial effect, which might prove too much even for the most avid strawberry lovers.
There are many supplements those are believed to act as a memory booster. While some of them are based on medicinal herbs and others have vitamins and minerals. The effect may be similar, though the active substances differ in almost all the cases. Although it may seem odd, the efficiency of a memory booster is also conditioned by the place where it has been produced and others consider that is better to choose a memory booster that is based on vitamins B1, B6, B9, B12, C and E, on minerals such as iron or on other substances such as fish oils and the vitamins from the B complex are recognized for their effective way to protect the nervous system.
