Myopia

Myopia is nothing but nearsightedness. People with myopic vision are able to see the things that are near well, but it is difficult for them to see things in the distance. You inherit this problem usually.
The lens, cornea, as well as the length of the eye determine the eyes’ focusing behaviour.
Causes
There are different reasons for myopia.
It may the result of being inherited. Most often, they can be in the genes.
It can be because of age also. Myopia affects people in the age group of 10 to 40, which usually is less after you reach 45.
Stress can also be a reason. Myopia can also be work related. Working too close to computers, accounting, sewing, jewellery work as well as excessive reading can result in development of myopia.
Personality type, emotional factors, in addition to diet are also considered to be possible causes to developing nearsightedness.
Symptoms and diagnosis
Myopic vision does not allow you to see things in the distance clearly. It is usually detected during an eye exam and refraction. Refraction is a simple vision test, which may involve the use of computerised equipment or a simple phoropter. A phoropter holds several lenses, and you are told to see through the lenses while the doctor adusts the different lenses in front of your eye. You will have to see through them until you can see clearly enough.
Treatment
Eyeglasses or contact lenses are the best treatment for myopia because they help to focus the light properly on the retina, allowing you to see clearly. Other methods of treatment are as follows.
Vision correction surgery
This is also known as Refractive surgery and it involves altering the shape of the cornea so that you can see better because the light will now be focussed properly on the cornea.
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)
A computer-guided laser is used to change the curvature of the cornea of your eye. The eye can now refract light onto the retina, eliminating nearsightedness.
LASIK has evolved from PRK. It combines surgery and laser treatment together to treat high myopia.
It has been extremely successful with eliminating the need of glasses to drive in 95% percent of the patients.
