Moisturizers are very important for our daily fashion routine. They help in retaining the water content in the skin which is otherwise evaporated. The application of moisturizers is very important to maintain proper epidermal health. Whatever age, skin type or color it is, using moisturizers everyday is very essential. There are certain moisturizers for tinting the skin color too.
Ingredients
Generally, moisturizers are made up of humectants and emollients. Humectants absorb water from the air and are useful in softening the skin. Emollients are useful in filling the pores and empty cells, thereby lubricating the skin. Emollients can be water-based as well as oil-based. In oil-based, small amount of water is dissolved in oil whereas the water-based emollients are non-greasy. Moisturizers also include fragrances for nice odor and preservatives for preventing any kind of bacterial contamination. Other ingredients that a moisturizer may contain are: vitamins, minerals, plant & flower extracts, sunscreen and sunless tanners.
Type of moisturizer one should use
The kind of moisturizer that one should use depends on many factors such as the type of skin, age, exposure to sun and skin conditions such as acne etc. Normal skin requires neither too oily nor too dry moisturizer. Dry skin requires a moisturizer that has more oil content in it. For an oily skin, oil-free and water based product is more suitable, As the skin ages, it becomes drier and it becomes necessary to care for it with well-chosen moisturizers that contain petrolatum as the base, along with lactic acid or alpha hydroxyl acids.
Things to keep in mind
One should look for a moisturizer that is suitable for the skin type. There is no relation between the costs of the moisturizer to its effectiveness. One should not necessarily be drawn to over-priced products assuming they are more effective. Moisturizers should be applied immediately after bathing to hands and body along with the face. It is advisable to apply moisturizer on the hands every time they are washed.
If there is any persistent problem in the skin even after the proper application of moisturizers, then it should be immediately shown to the doctor or dermatologist.
