Men Are Judged On Basis Of Competence, Women Sociability
September 19, 2008
Men are considered as the symbol of strength and power, whereas women are considered as icon of beauty, gorgeousness and grace. On 25th April at Washington, it was stated that people usually judge all men on the basis of their ability as well as competence. In addition, it was also stated that women are judged automatically on the basis of sociability. This general view of all the people is mainly because of the fact that men normally do all kinds of work that are related with potency and muscular power. Whereas women are comfortable only with work that requires less muscular power. The phenomenon behind above statements is: men are physically stronger than women, thus they can do all heavy works better as compared to women.
Through many studies it is proved that when you observe someone in social context, qualities related to competence like motivation, efficacy, aptitude and intelligence, are generally more triggered when you judge women or men in their conventional roles. In other words man work better in their working areas or in office as leaders and women work better as housewives.
Some qualities associated to the sociability like understanding, sensibility, kindness and emotions are more directed to women. Women can carry themselves easily in social gatherings as they are habitual for such events. However, men are mainly busy in their official matters and thus they have no time for even themselves and for their family. Therefore, they feel quite uncomfortable to act like social animal in such events. However, above sociability qualities are especially activated more in counter-stereotype perspective for e.g. man doing housework’s and woman as leader.
In addition, women usually judge men negatively if they play their traditional role because of their emotional reactions. On the other hand, when women play any counter-stereotype role, then their thinking changes significantly.
Therefore, many researchers revealed that it may be quite interesting to build possible utilization of prejudice as strategy for many social changes and as a method to see that women not only response negatively for maintaining gender equality rather develop some positive behavioral tactics in order to promote social uniformity as well as equality.
