Given the current state of affairs where food is concerned, given sufficient money, most shoppers concerned about health and food safety would buy only organic food.  But, when one is on a budget and there is a family to feed, there are not many who can afford to opt entirely for organic produce.  However, if you are seriously concerned about exposing your family to chemical pesticides, by selecting the right organic foods, you can avoid breaking the bank.

Studies on the effects of pesticides have many health experts believing that even small doses adversely affect people.  Especially during vulnerable periods, such as, foetal development and during childhood, when exposure can have long lasting effects.  Though the long-term toxic effects of pesticides are not fully understood, yet, shoppers would be wise to minimise exposure to them when possible.

Wash and rinse all fruits and vegetables well to reduce pesticide levels, though you cannot fully eliminate them.  Peeling also helps reduce exposure, but it also means valuable nutrients go into the garbage bin with the peel.  The most practical option is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce and choose organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Tests show that some fruits and vegetables are far more likely to be contaminated with pesticides, while others consistently come out clean, which means certain non-organic produce can be eaten without overdue concern.  Consumers can cut their pesticide exposure by almost 90%, if they avoid the most contaminated fruits and vegetables, while eating the least contaminated, instead.

Eating twelve of the most contaminated fruits and vegetables exposes a person to an average 15-pesticides a day. While, eating 12 of the least contaminated exposes a person to fewer than two per day.

Peaches and apples top the Dirty Dozen list.  Almost 97% of peaches and 92% of apples tested positive for pesticides.  The rest of the dirty dozen include sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, imported grapes, spinach, lettuce and potatoes.

Onions, avocados, and sweet corn consistently topped the clean list, including pineapples, mango, asparagus, peas, kiwi fruit, bananas, cabbage, broccoli and papaya.

For limited budgets, knowing safe non-organic foods leaves one with more cash to spend on organic fruits and vegetables.
