Managing Headache During Pregnancy

Causes for headache during pregnancy:
Headache during pregnancy is a common feature. During the first trimester, headache occurs due to change in hormone. Headache also occurs during the third trimester and this is supposed to be due to additional weight the pregnant women would put on and also due to change in posture.
Apart from this, drinking caffeine, stress, depression, eating cold food, dehydration, etc. are some other causes for headache. Although the actual cause of headache in case of pregnant women is not yet ascertained, it is said that due to brain constrain and dilation, some women would experience migraine headache. Many of the women would experience migraine when they become pregnant for the first time.
The remedies for the headache during pregnancy are taking acetaminophen in proper dosage. But oral medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen and other prescription drugs for headache are not to be taken by pregnant women. It is always advisable to consult the doctor before taking any medicine.
Apart from medication, here are other ways to relieve the pain during pregnancy.
1. Identify the cause: Identify the cause of the pain. If stress is the cause, then try to locate the reason for the stress. Then take lots of water or any other liquid.
Take to mediation, writing, reading good magazines or books and listening to music etc. Do not take aged cheese, alcohol, dairy products, etc. If any person has caused the stress, then stay away from him and as far as possible try to be with the partner.
2. Compression: Another way to get relief from migraine is to compress the forehead and the base of the neck. This gives good relief from migraine.
3. Shower: Cold water is known to dilate the blood vessels and reduce headache. One of the ways is to splash cold water on the face. If the woman likes, she can take a shower also. This gives good relief from migraine.
4. Massaging: A body massage by an expert will give good relief. He can be asked to concentrate on neck, back muscles and shoulder because by this, pain gets relieved immediately.
5. Enough food: The pregnant woman should take care to see that she does not get hungry or thirsty. This is because, by this the blood sugar would reduce and it may be the reason for the headache.
