Malignant Mesothelioma

This is an uncommon cancer that is not easily diagnosed, and also does not easily respond to therapy. It is one of the very serious diseases related to asbestos. It develops in an organ called mesothelial cells.
The mesothelial cells are found in the abdominal and chest cavities, and around the heart. They are responsible for producing a special liquid that makes it possible for the organs to move easily.
The mesothelium is known by different names according to where they are. In the abdomen, it is called peritoneum; in the chest it is called the pleura; and the one around the heart is called pericardium.
Tumors do develop on the mesothelium, some of which are non-cancerous and others cancerous. When it is cancerous it is called malignant mesothelioma. Most of the mesothelial tumors are cancerous; therefore the name mesothelioma is used simply used to denote the malignant or the cancerous type.
History of mesothelioma
This type of cancer was discovered in the 18th century, but its description was done in details as late as 1960. It was then that it was found to be associated with exposure to asbestos.
The one who made the revelation of the relation to asbestos exposure was called J.C. Wagner. He studied 32 cases of the disease in workers at the Asbestos Hill in South Africa. After that, many more researches have confirmed asbestos exposure as the cause of mesothelioma.
Effects of mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a very deadly disease. Those who are diagnosed with the disease mostly die within 24 month after the diagnosis. In the US, many hardworking people in the factories, mines and shipyards were the ones that became affected by the disease.
They were happy with their jobs as it helps them take care of their families, but knew little that they were gradually killing themselves.
Types
Three types of mesothelioma exist. These are pleural mesothelioma, which develops in the chest affecting the lungs; peritoneal mesothelioma, which occurs in the abdomen; and pericardial mesothelioma, which develops on the heart. The name is derived from where the disease occurs.
If you want to prevent contracting mesothelioma, you have to avoid exposure to asbestos.
