Male Menopause
June 14, 2008
For centuries, we have known about female menopause, however, it was only recently discovered that there is such a thing as males going through a similar phenomenon with identical symptoms.
For long, the medical profession debated the existence of male menopause, whether it really existed or not, and if so at what age did the symptoms of menopause hit men. Whether, they were reversible with treatment and the precautions a man could take to prevent / postpone the male menopause?
Or, on the other hand, could it be a non-existent entity? Could it be just another ploy of male-bashing feminists to further emasculate men? Are senile eighty-year old men dating nubile young women really as capable as they seem, or are they merely fooling themselves, or are their partners fooling them?
Till recently, the entire subject of the male menopause was steeped in confusion and controversy. While, women were accused of going through middle-aged crises and menopause-related aberrations, their male counterparts got away with propagating the myth of the ageless male, boasting of virility to the grave. And, the score!
It is true that a man’s sexuality changes with advancing age. As a man grows older, his urge reduces, erections are slow, any time is not always a good time and much direct stimulation is required to get aroused. Is all this because of the maturation (maturity) process?
Put it down to a male mid-life crisis, a time in life when men have achieved stability and struggles that were once a large part of life are now over. This awareness that a life change has taken place often triggers off a crisis. For some men, newfound stability signifies an end to vitality and youth. Male menopause, on the other hand, is a distinct physiological phenomenon akin, yet quite different from the female menopause. Men experience a different type of menopause or change of life, usually between the ages of 45 and 60, sometimes as early as the thirties. Unlike women, men are able to continue fathering children, but the production of the male sex hormone (testosterone) diminishes gradually after age 40.
A few of the symptoms of male menopause include decreased sex drive. lack of energy, decrease in strength and/or endurance, lost height, decreased enjoyment of life, sad and/or grumpy, weak erections, deterioration in sports ability, falling asleep after dinner, decreased work performance.
Even a few of these symptoms could mean you are under-going a male menopause. Get a doctor to verify what is going on with you!
