Imagine being harassed on the issue of dowry. Just imagine you are the victim of dowry harassment. And, imagine a whole lot of lies spread about you, even as you are hounded out of your own home through no fault of yours. No need to dial the women’s help line because we are not talking about female dowry harassment, rather the topic is male dowry harassment.
How is one to cope if one is put behind bars for a crime one swears one has not committed? While, the Dowry Act was enacted to prevent women from becoming the victims of dowry harassment, today many unscrupulous women are using it for their own ends. This has resulted in these hapless sufferers also having a help line to turn to for succour
However, all the sympathy seems to be with harassed wives and daughters-in-law, while such concern is less forthcoming if replaced with husband and sons-in-law. Society is rather slow in taking male suffers seriously. One hears more about wife-bashers than husband-beaters, since for long women have been the traditional victims of patriarchal interests and social inequities. The words dowry, harassment, and victim were only used for the female gender, and laws were framed to protect women from them. Yet, the day has come when the worm has turned and the same laws are being used to torment men.
